Casual Friday — Antarctica, unveiled

Ever wonder what Antarctica would look like without all that ice on it?  Thanks to the British Antarctic Survey (with some help from NASA), we’re getting a better view of it (direct link):

This is a quick video introduction of Bedmap2, the best map of Antarctica’s bedrock under the ice.  Based on the Bedmap project (now over 10 years old), and updated with data from NASA’s ICESat satellite and an airborne mission called Operation IceBridge, Bedmap2 gives scientists a detailed map of the frozen continent.  This should hopefully help predict how Antarctica’s ice will behave in the face of our warming climate.
