Casual Friday — 49 quadrocopters in outdoor formation flight

Here’s a mesmerizing way to spend the next 4+ minutes of your day — watch this colorful bit of outdoor performance art, performed by a swarm of 49 lit quadrocopters (a.k.a., quadrotors — tiny four-bladed helicopters), flying over the skies of Linz, Austria at night (direct link):

According to the Ars Electronica Futurelab website (in German), the quadrocopters were controlled by software in computers on the ground, their positions being on target to within millimeters. During the show (“The cloud in the web”), the color of the LED-lit orb each AscTec Hummingbird quadrocopter carried was also controlled, in order to create what is essentially a very sparse 3-D display surface.
