Casual Friday — Vesta’s coat of many colors

An animation of the asteroid Vesta (based on imagery from the Dawn spacecraft), in false color to exaggerate differences in surface composition (direct link):

Vesta is now seen as a proto-planet — a layered, planetary building block with an iron core. It’s the only one known to have survived from the earliest days of the solar system (although Ceres may also fall in this class, time will tell). In the above video, green shows the relative abundance of iron, but the other colors are still being sorted out w.r.t. their mineralogical significance.
