The scientific tourist #195 — azurite and malachite

Another image from the excellent geology collection at the Houston (Texas) Museum of Natural Science — this one of a sample of azurite and malachite:

Azurite & Malachite

Azurite and malachite are commonly found together; this makes sense, given that they are both by-products of the decomposition of copper ores. This particular sample is interesting in that the malachite (green) is layered on the outside of the azurite (blue).
