Casual Friday — the Falkirk Wheel

Courtesy of TechEBlog comes this flash video of the Falkirk Wheel — the world’s first and only rotating boat wheel:

The Falkirk Wheel is located in central Scotland, and allows boat traffic between the Union Canal and the Forth and Clyde Canal — which have an elevation difference of some 24 meters.

Archimedes’ principle assures that the two caissons always weigh the same — as a result, the huge wheel rotates through 180 degrees in five and a half minutes, while consuming about as much power as a dozen kettles of water!
