Casual Friday — math quiz!
As Science magazine (sorry, subscriber link), Newsweek, and a number of blogs have pointed out, the powers-that-be in Washington D.C. have responded to the U.S.’ abysmal showings in past tests of mathematical prowess the only way they understand:
They’ve cancelled the U.S.’ participation in the next round of testing.
That’s right, if the tests don’t tell you what you want to hear, just don’t take them. Granted, SOS readers live all over the planet, but I thought a productive response to this news would be to conduct my own math testing. So, I’ve got just one question for you — could you pass 8th grade math?
Here are my results:

![]() Congratulations, you got 9/10 correct! |
How’d you do? Do tell…

That was moderately challenging. I got 10/10, but only because I was extra careful on the stats question. I also recommend the MathCounts program http://www.mathcounts.org/ as a source of challenging, middle-school level math problems.

I just messed up the mean / median / mode question. I don’t know why, but I ALWAYS forget the mode — maybe because I haven’t had any practice with it since college…
Thanks, too, for the “MathCounts” link — looks to be a valuable resource!

I’m c**p at maths. I only got 4 out of 10. But I expected to have 7.
But I seem to get by quite well without algebra.
